UC Davis research on FMR1, fragile X and autism

I wrote four feature articles in this November, 2008, edition of the UC Davis MIND Institute newsletter, MIND Matters. The cover story deals with research into a single gene, FMR1, known to be the cause of several neurological illnesses. On page 3 is an overview of the Autism Phenome Project, seeking to determine whether there are many different types of autism, a supposition that has never been authoritatively shown to date, and on page 4 is a look at the large team assembled to implement this project. Finally, page 8 features a profile of researcher David Hessl, an expert on both autism and a neurodevelopmental disorder known as fragile X syndrome.

MIND Matters - Winter 2008

The Winter 2008 issue of MIND Matters, published by the UC Davis MIND Institute, features two lead articles that I wrote. The first, seen on pp. 1 and 2, deals with two researchers who are independently investigating potential ties between neurological and immune system development, ties that might explain how autism is caused. The second, seen on pp. 3-5, outlines the importance of animal models in exploring the causes of such neurological disorders as autism.
